STAGES
(25550 days)
STAGES reflects on the human condition and the inevitability of aging. The work progresses through 25550 days in a life - 70 years from age 14 to 84 - showing the development of identity from youth through to the tribulations of adulthood and into the slow decline of old age (and eventually death).
NOTES on DURATION:
Each second represents exactly 100 days of time passing, approximately 5 years each time the head looks from left to right.
NOTES on FORM:
The portrait in STAGES is in opposition to the qualities of a traditional sculptural bust (Jaume Plensa). The form lacks a coherent surface, vibrating and constantly changing. The colours are erratic and evolving (reflecting the emotional currents of life), and the structure of the face ages over time. During the piece, four stressful life events upset the "sense of self" and manifest themselves by reducing the visual fidelity and recognizability of the portrait.
